How do you choose a package locker system?
Start with your package volume, your available space, and the carriers that deliver to your property. Then choose a system that accepts every carrier, expands as volume grows, offers refrigerated and oversized options, and syncs with your property management software. Luxer One® covers all of these from one cloud platform, and Locker Solutions, a Luxer One® National Premier Partner, sizes each configuration from your actual package counts before quoting.
How many package lockers per unit does an apartment community need?
A common rule of thumb is roughly one locker compartment for every 2 to 3 units, adjusted for package volume, resident demographics, and whether a smart package room handles overflow. Treat that as a starting point, not a final number: compartment count is driven by daily package volume, which is why two 200-unit communities can need different banks.
A simple way to check the rule of thumb is to estimate compartments in use at peak: multiply your peak daily deliveries by the average number of days a package sits before the resident picks it up. Size for a peak week, not an average one, since the holiday season can double normal load. Locker Solutions sizes every Luxer One® quote from your unit count, peak-week package volume, and a photo or floor plan of the space, so you do not overbuy doors or run out during peak season.
Indoor lockers, outdoor kiosks, or both?
Indoor space is planned by wall length, not square footage. Indoor Luxer One® lockers are modular columns that stand against a wall and need power and network access within reach. If there is no usable wall, an outdoor Luxer One® kiosk on a concrete pad removes the indoor footprint entirely. Past a few hundred doors, most properties move to a hybrid: an outdoor kiosk plus indoor lockers or a smart package room, rather than one long wall of compartments.
Which carriers can deliver into the lockers?
Carrier compatibility is the deciding factor for many properties. Luxer One® lockers accept deliveries from USPS, UPS, FedEx, Amazon, DHL, and most regional and local couriers with no per-package fees. A locker built mainly for one retailer leaves every other delivery in the leasing office. See Luxer One® vs Amazon Hub Locker for that comparison.
Do you need refrigerated package lockers?
If residents order groceries, meal kits, or pharmacy deliveries, Luxer One® refrigerated lockers (Luxer Fridge) keep those items cold until pickup, with refrigerated and frozen compartments. They run on the same Luxer One® platform as standard lockers.
Can the system expand later?
Choose modular hardware. Luxer One® lockers expand tower by tower as volume grows, and adding compartments to an existing Luxer One® bank reuses the controller and software account. That is why the first install can be sized with room to grow instead of oversized on day one.
How long does package locker installation take?
For Luxer One®, from signed order to a live system is typically 6 to 10 weeks, and most of that is manufacturing lead time. The physical install is usually one day for indoor towers and two to three days for outdoor kiosks that need pad work. Site readiness, electrical, and network access are the main factors, and Locker Solutions coordinates that work with your GC or maintenance team.
Resident pickup and software
Residents get a text and email when a package arrives and pick up 24/7 with a one-time code or the Luxer One® resident app, rated 4.7 on the App Store (30,000+ reviews). Luxer One® syncs resident rosters with major property management software, so move-ins and move-outs update automatically. After installation, Luxer One® provides 24/7 live U.S.-based support and remote monitoring, and Locker Solutions stays your account owner. See who supports Luxer One® after installation.
Package locker buying checklist
- Measured package volume, including a peak week, not just unit count
- Usable wall length indoors, or a concrete pad location for an outdoor kiosk
- Every carrier you receive: USPS, UPS, FedEx, Amazon, DHL, and local couriers
- Refrigerated compartments if residents order groceries or meal kits
- A plan for oversized items, such as a smart package room
- Property management software sync so move-ins and move-outs update automatically
- Modular hardware that can expand without replacing the system
- Who supports the system after installation, and what the warranty covers
For overflow and oversized deliveries that lockers do not absorb, some communities add On-Site Package Management, a managed package program that complements lockers (not offered in California, New Hampshire, or New York City).
